A Letter from our Executive Director

My name is Amy Farber. It is my pleasure to introduce you to your LAM Treatment Alliance, formed with the exclusive mission of supporting and promoting scientific research and medical advances relating to the treatment and care of lymphangioleiomyomatosis or LAM.

LAM is a progressive and ultimately fatal neoplastic disease with no effective treatment. LAM almost exclusively affects women, commonly during their primes - and devastates whole families.

LAM kills women by suffocating them to death. Some women progress to respiratory failure and premature death within a few years of diagnosis. Others can live for over a decade. We never know how fast our own disease will progress. We do know however, that there is nothing we can do right now to stop it or slow it down. As a result, at this time, women with LAM and their families need more than hope. Rather, we need a special kind of hope that is rooted in the acceleration of collaborations that can lead to the breakthroughs that are most likely to save lives in the fastest time possible without sacrificing the quality or integrity of the science.

The LAM Treatment Alliance was founded on a simple premise. As long as women continue to die prematurely without an effective treatment to slow or stop LAM, we will be exclusively dedicated to the search for a treatment with the gusto of one with no time to waste. We act as if the possibility that the disease may progress quickly resides in us all. The responsibility to act without losing time, and to think inside as well as outside the box has arisen in me and grown fast roots through the love and support of family, friends, colleagues, scientists and institutions. Every morsel of this work requires a village of support and collaborators at individual, scientific organizational and institutional levels. Together we can, and we are, moving mountains.

Funding the best and the brightest in particular areas of expertise, the LAM Treatment Alliance accelerates the pace of treatment research through aggressively advancing a four-pronged agenda:

At the LAM Treatment Alliance, excellence and collaboration are our core values. We deeply appreciate your interest and whatever you can do to express your active support. By having read this far, you are already a treasured member of a team that is committed to moving mountains to achieve our life-saving mission. We are solely dedicated to finding a treatment for LAM. We cannot achieve our mission without you. Your support makes progress in life-saving research possible. Please accept my most heartfelt thanks.
